The community of Ricardo, on U.S. Highway 77 six miles south of Kingsville in Kleberg County, began as a railroad siding on the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway. In 1908 Robert Kleberg, Sr., manager of the King Ranch, asked the railroad to build a depot at the site. The station was given the name Richard, which was later changed to the Spanish form, Ricardo.

As settlers moved to the area, an independent school district was formed. In 1913 a schoolhouse was erected, and two teachers were employed. As the years passed and the population grew, the school expanded. Presently, Ricardo ISD is a TEA High Performing District that offers pre-kindergarten through the eighth grade with enrollment averaging 650 students. The District employs 16 administrative staff, 45 teachers, 20 auxiliary staff, and the Operations department employs 15 individuals for maintenance, custodial, and bus drivers.

Each classroom teacher has a laptop, 65" Promethean interactive flat screen, and document camera. Pre-K and Kinder grades have a classroom set of Android tablets. Grades 1st through 4th have a classroom set of chromebooks. Each student in grades 5th through 8th is issued a chromebook. Ricardo ISD strives to maintain an advanced network infrastructure along with hardware to give staff and students an excellent learning environment and experience.
